If the boys’ national team travels to Asia and plays smaller teams like the UAE, the media won’t shut up about what a waste of time it is to send the whole squad to the Emirates, how meaningless it is to win or score goals in these matches, how basically everyone would have had better things to do at the time.

Well, be that as it may, I just don’t think the Algarve Cup is that big of a hindrance to the development of womens’ soccer.
I’d go down and watch, if I had the money.

It is simple. Only 50 spectators turn up at AC games because it is a waste of time. In the Champions League there were good attendances for the matches with FCR and Bayern because fans in those countries want to go and see the star names. It would be the same for international games in Warsaw, Glasgow and Vienna. Certainly more than 50 fans would attend.

Also, it does nothing for the development of FF if the big countries only play against each other. How are Scotland, Poland and Austria going to make progress if they are not allowed to play the big countries? The boys from Germany and Brazil play internationals with smaller countries – why not the girls. Most importantly the boys do not have an AC because it is a waste of time and does nothing for the development of the game. The only benefit of the AC is for small countries (Luxembourg, Angorra) to have a competition of their own.

@Neidneindanke: Ich glaube nicht, dass Herr Zwanziger irgendwo im stillen Kämmerlein eigenmächtig den Anmeldezettel der Nationalmannschaft für den Algarve Cup ausfüllt. Die Nordlichter haben doch das Turnier aus der Taufe gehoben, zu einem Termin der ihnen geschickt ist. Wenn man damit größere Probleme hat, sollte man das als Big Four der Bundesliga (oder wer auch immer die mit dem Wettbewerbsnachteil sein sollen) doch gegenüber Neid, Zwanziger etc. artikulieren können.

Ansonsten kann ich Sloan nur zustimmen, ohne ne Quali werden Turniere dieser Art und hochkarätige Freundschaftsspiele nötig sein um Mannschaft und Publikum auf die WM vorzubereiten.
Zudem möchte ich den Algarve Cup nicht missen, weil es Fraunfußball ist, der im TV übertragen wird. Natürlich fände ich es auch spannender ein paar gute Bundesligaspiele zu sehen, aber solange die Sender nur die Nationalmannschaft auf dem Schirm haben, sind je mehr Spiele desto besser in meinen Augen.

In Vorbereitung auf die WM 2011 dürften Veranstaltungen wie der Algarve Cup für das deutsche Team zunehmend wichtiger werden, da man ja bekanntlich keine Pflichtspiele mehr bestreitet. Ich denke es wäre für den DFB überlegenswert für den Sommer 2010 ein kleines Einladungsturnier der besten sechs oder acht Mannschaften zu organisieren – als Gegenstück zum ConFed Cup der Männer. Es würde der Deutschen Mannschaft nicht nur nötige Matchpraxis liefern, sondern die Öffentlichkeit auch auf die bevorstehende WM einstimmen (die U20 WM wird dafür nicht herhalten können).

Germany, USA, Sweden playing in Warsaw, Glasgow, Vienna with over 10,000 spectators, even with kantersieg, is far better for progress.
